Today, we collect and store data from multiple sources: IT systems, online activities (such as websites, search engines, web shops, social media) and smart devices (Internet of Things). Big data is the collective name for this data. Due to the increasing use of the internet in emerging countries such as China and India, we produced 40 zettabytes of big data in 2020. In this blog, we share 3 factors of a data center that are affected by the growth of big data.
1. Security
Data center security is an important aspect affected by the growth of big data. Big data is all about large or unstructured amounts of data, so security is a critical challenge. For example, the data often contains confidential information of an organization. As a data center, we want to avoid potential security risks by adhering to security requirements and obtaining certifications. In that context, we understand that when it comes to big data, the security of a data center must be implemented at the network level, storage level and application level. As IT infrastructure expands to support data volume, planning must be made to mitigate threats from all directions.
2. Storage infrastructure
Big data also affects the storage infrastructure of data centers. Data centers are designed to store relational data, but data centers now need to store other data as well (such as structured, unstructured, and semi-structured.). Thus, the storage infrastructure needs to be improved to support and store large amounts of data. Big data has its own characteristics such as speed, volume, fidelity and variety, so the data center storage infrastructure must support these characteristics. To overcome this complexity, we as a data center make storage plans to support big data.
3. Network infrastructure
Big data also affects the network infrastructure of data centers. The data center's existing wide area network (WAN) connections can meet moderate bandwidth requirements. Since the applications originally only interacted with data centers through human-generated requests, these requests were relatively small in volume compared to the volume of big data inflow. Big data sources send massive amounts of data to data centers, increasing incoming bandwidth requirements. Therefore, the data center network infrastructure must be modified / upgraded to support the volume and speed of data. It also increases the bandwidth requirement of the network.
